## Spotlightr review: fit for a VSL?

Spotlightr is the pick if you sell a course or membership through funnels, want every video encrypted and gated in a branded player on plans that start at $13 a month, and do not need the host to tie a play to a sale.

Quick answer

Spotlightr is a real host with a long record: it launched in 2013 as VooPlayer and Zimmplify LLC runs it. Plans start at $13 a month billed annually, after a 14-day trial that asks for no card. It fits a course library plus the funnel that sells it. Buy it for a cold-traffic VSL and two things can sting: Light's 200 GB monthly allowance runs out fast on a long video, and its reports stop at watch depth and list segments, so your ad platform never hears which play became an order.

You saw Spotlightr named in a thread about course video, or someone suggested it as a cheaper Wistia. The name is unfamiliar, and you do not want to move your library and your sales video only to find the catch after the switch.

It is a real company. Spotlightr's [about page](https://spotlightr.com/about/) says it “launched small in 2013” under the name VooPlayer, and the business behind it is Zimmplify LLC. Its homepage calls it secure, affordable video hosting for courses on WordPress, Kajabi, Thinkific and membership sites, and claims more than 8,000 membership sites and a 4.8 out of 5 score on Capterra. Both numbers are the vendor's own. This review is built from Spotlightr's homepage, pricing, features and marketers pages, its help docs, and user reports on Reddit, G2 and Capterra. We did not run it on a live campaign, and [how we evaluate video hosts](/methodology) explains the method.

### What you get on every plan

Every upload is HLS encrypted, which the homepage states as “HLS encrypted, always”. That protection comes with the cheapest plan, which is uncommon at a $13 entry price. The free WordPress plugin and a LearnDash integration put videos into a course site without juggling embed codes.

The marketing tools sit on the same player. The [marketers page](https://spotlightr.com/marketers/) lists email or phone gates that can appear at the start or at a timestamp, Stripe pay gates for a paid masterclass, and scheduled playback that makes a recorded webinar run like a live one at a set date and time. Viewers can be segmented by percent watched and passed to HubSpot, ActiveCampaign or the rest of your stack through Zapier.

Hybrid hosting is the feature that changes the bill. You can play a file kept on YouTube or Amazon S3 through Spotlightr's player, and the [bandwidth help article](https://docs.spotlightr.com/en/articles/1479377-using-cdn-bandwidth) says bandwidth “is only used when you upload your videos directly to Spotlightr”. A long webinar replay can keep its file elsewhere and still get the gate and the branding.

### Spotlightr on a VSL landing page

The plan comparison lists auto-play, smart-play on scroll and a floating video that follows the reader down the page, plus a custom redirect when the video ends. On the Plus plan and above you can turn off forward seeking, so a viewer cannot jump ahead to the price. Add a timed gate or button and a sales video runs on Spotlightr with the basic mechanics a VSL page expects.

What it will not do is grade the video on revenue. Spotlightr's own [features page](https://spotlightr.com/features/) quotes a customer who A/B tests videos “in lading pages or blog posts”, a page-level test you score with your own tools. Nothing on its pages describes split testing judged on sales, or cart-verified conversions sent back to Meta or Google. You will see watch depth and list growth, and the ad click that paid for an order stays invisible.

Media buyers who judge every ad on sales usually keep the VSL on a conversion player. The [Vidalytics review](/reviews/vidalytics) covers the most established one, and the [Voomly review](/reviews/voomly) covers a cheaper marketer host with unlimited bandwidth. If your VSL sells a course you also host, Spotlightr can carry both on one bill. Against [Wistia](/reviews/wistia), you trade Wistia's B2B content features for a lower price and course tooling.

##### What works

* Every upload is HLS encrypted on every plan, so the $13 Light account already encrypts lessons against downloads.
* Email or phone gates at the start or at a timestamp, Stripe pay gates and scheduled playback that runs a replay like a live webinar all come from one dashboard.
* Hybrid hosting plays files kept on YouTube or S3 through Spotlightr's branded player without touching Spotlightr bandwidth, which keeps long replays off the meter.
* Viewers can be segmented by percent watched and sent to HubSpot, ActiveCampaign or other tools through Zapier, so a follow-up email can depend on how much of the video someone saw.
* A free WordPress plugin and a LearnDash integration drop videos into a course site, and long-term users on Reddit single out the support team.
* Going past the monthly bandwidth does not stop playback. Each extra gigabyte is billed at $0.05, so a traffic spike costs money and the sales page keeps working.

##### What to watch

* Light caps you at 25 videos and 200 GB of bandwidth a month. One 20-minute VSL that 5,000 visitors watch for a quarter of its length uses about 625 GB, and the extra 425 GB adds about $21 to the plan.
* No sale attribution. Spotlightr's pages mention no split testing judged on sales and no cart-verified conversions sent to ad platforms. Gates, CTAs and CRM tags still work, but Meta or Google never learns which play earned an order.
* Reporting draws complaints. A G2 reviewer asked for better tracking metrics and reports, which matters if you cut a VSL by its retention curve.
* Reviews of the dashboard are mixed. One Capterra reviewer called it a “confusing and terrible user experience”, while others on the same listing describe smooth playback.

### What third-party users say

The warmest praise is about the people behind it. In a [r/MarketersSuccessClub thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/MarketersSuccessClub/comments/1mn5yh9/what%5Fare%5Fthe%5Fbest%5Fvideo%5Fhosting%5Fplatforms%5Ffor/) asking for the best video hosting platforms, a user recommending Spotlightr wrote that “their support is top notch”.

The criticism is about depth. On [G2](https://www.g2.com/compare/spotlightr-vs-vdocipher), a reviewer comparing Spotlightr with VdoCipher wrote that “they should improve its tracking metrics and reports”. On [Capterra](https://www.capterra.com/p/171753/Spotlightr/reviews/), one reviewer described a “confusing and terrible user experience”, on a listing where other reviewers report smooth playback. Every complaint we found concerns reports or settings, and we found none about the encryption or the gating.

### My take

I'd judge Spotlightr by the job of the video. For a lesson library and the webinar that sells it, a clumsy settings screen is a fair price for encryption on every plan and gates built in. For a VSL you trim second by second on paid traffic, the reporting complaint is the one to weigh, and I would start that video on a conversion player instead.

### Spotlightr pricing: four plans and a bandwidth meter

Spotlightr sells four plans, each cheaper per month on annual billing. Light, the entry plan, includes 25 videos, 50 GB of storage and 200 GB of bandwidth a month. Plus adds the dynamic IP watermark and the option to block forward seeking.

| Plan | Annual | Monthly |
| ------- | ------- | ------- |
| Light | $13/mo | $15/mo |
| Plus | $21/mo | $25/mo |
| Premium | $55/mo | $65/mo |
| Scale | $163/mo | $195/mo |

Past the allowance, the [pricing page](https://spotlightr.com/pricing/) bills $0.05 for each extra gigabyte delivered and $0.03 for each extra gigabyte stored, and the video keeps playing. For a VSL that means the bill grows with traffic. At this site's assumed stream of about 0.025 GB a minute, a 20-minute video that 5,000 visitors watch for a quarter of its length delivers roughly 625 GB, so Light lands near $34 for the month. A 45-minute video seen by 30,000 visitors who watch a fifth of it delivers about 6,700 GB, which puts Light near $338\. Voomly's Plus plan includes unlimited bandwidth and stays at $19 a month in both cases.

Hybrid hosting breaks that link. Keep the file on YouTube or S3, play it through Spotlightr's player, and the heavy month stays at the $13 plan fee. For a sales video on paid traffic I would start on Plus for the seek lock and watermark, and put any long replay on hybrid hosting. The [VSL hosting cost calculator](/best/vsl-hosting-cost-calculator-what-one-sales-video-costs-on-each-host) prices the same video on hosts that meter differently, and the [Spotlightr pricing page](/reviews/spotlightr/pricing) has the worked examples.

### Frequently asked questions

Is Spotlightr the same as VooPlayer?

Yes. The company launched as VooPlayer in 2013 and later took the Spotlightr name. Zimmplify LLC runs it.

Does Spotlightr work for a VSL?

It plays one with autoplay, smart-play on scroll, timed gates and an end redirect. It cannot report which plays became sales, so ad-scaled VSLs usually sit on a conversion player.

What happens when I exceed my bandwidth?

The video keeps streaming and you pay five cents per extra gigabyte. Playing files from YouTube or S3 avoids the meter.

How does Spotlightr compare to Vidalytics?

Vidalytics is built for direct-response selling and goes deeper on retention reporting. Spotlightr starts cheaper and adds course tools such as LearnDash and pay gates.

Can I host on YouTube and still use the Spotlightr player?

Yes, through hybrid hosting. YouTube serves the file while your branding and gates stay on the player.

Is there a free trial?

Two weeks, and no card is needed to start.

Mara edits the reviews and roundups on VSL Host Report. She looks at how a video player behaves on cold paid traffic: autoplay and unmute behaviour, per-second retention, timed CTAs, lead gates and load speed. She also maps what each host really costs, whether it bills per play, per gigabyte or per seat, and rebuilds the monthly bill for a typical VSL funnel. For each piece she reads long-term user reports across forums and review sites, works through the vendor's own docs and pricing, and confirms the numbers before a verdict goes live.
